Here are the things to remember when releasing butterflies during occasions.
When the Butterfly Arrive:
The butterflies arrive at a Styrofoam box or large box with ice pack. This is to keep the butterflies in a calm state, as they are when they hibernate during the colder months of the year. At home you can put them on refrigerator but NOT in FREEZER, cover them with clothes of anything that will keep the release basket darker. They are safe to stay there overnight up to two days because they are already fed and exercised before the delivery.
* Do not store them in hot places, they are cold-blooded and will immediately die.
Readying your Butterfly on the day of Event:
Two or three hours before the time of the release you will need to remove the individual release boxes or envelopes from the storage box and away from the ice in order for them to begin to warm up and get ready to fly.
- Place the release boxes or envelopes in a sunny spot for about a half an hour if it is a cooler day. Remember that the butterflies won’t fly at all if the temperature outside is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius).
- If it is very warm outside, place the release boxes in a shady area for the two or three hours. A sunny, warm, flower-filled area or garden is the most ideal place.
- When release at afternoon, it should be at least 1 or half an hour before the sunset, to give them time to look for food and shelter before it gets dark.
- Do not capture or kill them, let them fly and begin life cycle and repopulate.
Once the butterflies are released, they will fly to nearby flowers and plants. A butterfly first flight is usually very short, and they will instinctively fly toward the brightest object. Usually, much to the delight of wedding guests, people wearing bright colors, or towards flowers and bouquets. During the release there will be many opportunities for wedding pictures of the bride and groom with the butterflies as well as the guests. Be sure the photographer and guests have their cameras ready!
